About the MAGIC Catalog
MAGIC, the online library catalog of the Partners Healthcare System, Inc., is a database that lists all of the materials found in the Massachusetts General Hospital Patient and Family Learning Center, as well as eight other Partners' libraries such as the main hospital library called Treadwell, the Cancer Resource Room, and the library of the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. All these libraries catalog books, videos, pamphlets, journals and other media and make them available to the public through the online catalog called MAGIC.

MAGIC does not include journal articles.

Materials found in the Patient and Family Learning Center will be marked with a "PFLC" location code. Do not feel you have to remember these codes. If you need help, ask at the Reference Desk.

Within the PFLC sub-locations are denoted by an additional letter, which tells you where in the PFLC an item is.

  1. PFLCO: Oval Reading Room (Book)
  2. PFLCM: Multi-Media Room (Video)
  3. PFLCC: Children's Area (Children's book)
  4. PFLCJ: Journal (magazine in reading room)
  5. PFLCD: Displayed Pamphlet (in display racks)
  6. PFLCN: Non-displayed Pamphlet (in file drawers)

TITLE: to search by book or journal title (Journal articles are not included in the catalog). To locate journal articles, consult the librarian.
SUBJECT: to find items on a particular subject. Ask for assistance if you do not find items in your subject area.
KEYWORDS: if you are not sure of an exact title or subject. Enter one or more words.

  • Depending on the type of search you selected, type in either the author’s name, title of book, subject heading or keywords, then press the [Enter] key.

  • To find materials in the PFLC click on "Extended Display".

  • To quickly find materials just located in the PFLC, click on "Limit This Search"

  • Then click the down arrow to the right of "Where Item is located" and drag the bar down to "MGH PFLC"

  • Then click the long gray bar called "Limit/sort retrieved using above data"

  • Or you may simply use one of the search buttons above— title, subject, author, and type your search term

  • Many titles may appear, based on the type of search you did. With the location code PFLC displaying beneath all entries the PFLC owns. Click on the underlined area of the item you want to see, or follow the guide at the bottom of the window to start a new search.

  • Once you find the title of the material you are looking for, note the "Call Number" and "Location" of the information. This will help you find the information quickly on the shelf.
