In 1952 more than 57,600 people living in the U.S. contracted the poliovirus disease. For many survivors, the iron lung respirator became a haven, giving the polio-stricken patient an extension of life, doing the breathing for them.  Here we see nurses in the MGH White Building caring for patients with the new technology.  The lessons from this experience improved respiratory care and influenced critical care nursing.
