Statement of the Problem and Research Questions

  • Is the problem clearly stated?
  • Are the questions congruent with the problem statement?
  • Can the research question be answered with empirical data?
  • Is the significance of the problem to nursing discussed?

Review of the Literature

  • Is the review relevant to the stated problem?
  • Is the review current?
  • Is there an adequate balance of opinion versus empirical work, given the subject area?

Theoretical Framework
  • Is the theoretical framework identified?
  • Does the theoretical framework provide structure to the proposal?



Hypotheses / Research Questions

  • Does the theoretical framework logically generate and support the hypothesis?
  • Are the independent and dependent variables clearly identified?
  • Are the variables operationally defined?
  • If hypotheses are identified, are the hypotheses singular; testable?
  • Are the assumptions the investigator is making reasonable considering the theoretical work?
  • Are the limitations of the work identified?

Research Design

  • Does the design allow for reasonable control of extraneous variables?
  • Does the design allow for the research question to be answered?
  • Sample:
    • Is the sampling procedure identified?
    • Are sample size and characteristics described?
    • Is protection of human subjects adequately addressed?
    • Is a consent form provided?
    • Does the consent form contain adequate information to make decisions
      • risks and benefits
      • right to refuse
      • right to withdraw
      • confidentiality
      • means of contacting researcher
  • Is the setting identified?
  • Data Collection
    • Are the data to be gathered clearly identified?
    • Are data collection tools described?
    • Are sample data collection tools submitted as an appendix?
    • If needed, are reliability and validity of tools discussed?
    • Is the time frame for data collection identified?

  • Are plans for data analysis appropriate for

      • Is the method for presenting data identified?
    • Are potential implications for nursing described?
    • Is power analysis addressed?

    • Is the bibliography appropriate for study?

    • Are the appendices clearly labeled?
    • Has the research proposal been approved by the academic institution if applicable?
