You may have noticed blue poster boards on your unit entitled "Did You Know..." You may even have had the chance to read one. The Norman Knight Nursing Center for Clinical & Professional Development and the Nursing Research Committee are co-sponsoring an initiative to disseminate research findings to staff nurses and other members of the health care team.
Why display posters on research topics? Think about your nursing practice. Why do you choose one course of action over another? It might be because you were taught that way, or because you read a journal article that made you think you should try a certain strategy. Your rationale might simply be "because that's what works for this kind of patient." Perhaps you wouldn't cite research as the reason for your choice. But maybe you should. Research is integral to the practice of nursing. What we think of as "best practice" can go out of date within a few years. We must be constantly re-evaluating the effectiveness and efficiency of our patient care interventions. Nurses should have procedures, pathways, quality improvement tools, and policies that are grounded in research. However, it can be difficult to keep abreast of new research findings with a busy work schedule.
The Did You Know... posters are designed to help you keep up with the latest findings on topics using research utilization. Research utilization is the application of research to nursing practice. It takes place when research study findings are translated into nursing interventions. These interventions can be used in clinical practice to improve patient outcomes. Examples of poster topics over the past year include Decreasing Surgical Site Infections, Stroke…Think FAST and Diabetes Essentials. The Did You Know... posters are changed periodically throughout the year.
The Nursing Research Committee would like to hear your ideas. Please let us know what you think of the posters, what topics you would like to see, or if you or your unit would be interested in creating a Did You Know... poster! Tear-off reply sheets are available on all displays or send your comments directly to The Nursing Research Committee c/o The Norman Knight Nursing Center for Clinical & Professional Development, Founders 6.
We look forward to hearing from you!
