CYTOGENETICS
Overview of Cytogenetics
The Cytogenetics Laboratory serving
the Massachusetts General Hospital is a consolidated
laboratory representing various Harvard-affiliated
hospitals including the Brigham and Women's Hospital
(BWH), Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC,)
Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI), and Children's
Hospital (CH) in addition to the Massachusetts General
Hospital (MGH). The consolidated services were initiated
in July 1994 with the merger of BWH and CH labs at
BWH, expanded as of October 1996 with relocation of
the MGH lab to BWH, and were further expanded in January
1998 when the DFCI Cytogenetics Laboratory joined
the consolidated laboratories. As of August 1, 1999
the professional staff of the consolidated Cytogenetics
Laboratories have provided sign-out and supervisory
services for the BIDMC Cytogenetics Laboratory on
site at BIDMC.
Cytogenetics
Laboratory offers a full complement of diagnostic
chromosome tests for preimplantation, prenatal, perinatal
and cancer studies. Chromosome testing is performed
routinely with or on cells prepared from chorionic
villi, amniotic fluids, peripheral bloods, tissues,
bone marrows and solid tumors. Molecular cytogenetic
testing is available using fluorescence in situ hybridization
(FISH) for the rapid determination of aneuploidy,
detection of microdeletions and evaluation of chromosome
rearrangements.
