The MGH Department of Orthopaedic Surgery treats the largest volume of trauma, sports-medicine-related injury and musculoskeletal tumors of any hospital in the New England area with approximately 6,000 inpatient admissions and 30,000 ambulatory encounters annually.

Members of the staff at MGH provide dedicated coverage for Harvard University athletics, the MIT athletic programs and three New England Professional sports teams.

The MGH Arthroplasty Service is known internationally for its development of new models of artificial joints, improved technology and protocols for patient management, and for its use of novel biomaterials to improve the success of total joint replacement.

The MGH Connective Tissue Oncology Center, a world-renowned multidisciplinary program of specialists working in collaboration with the MGH Cancer Center, serves patients from the entire Northeast and abroad.

A newly developed multidisciplinary Spine Center is dedicated to treatment of patients with complex spinal problems. The Spine Center works closely with the departments of physical and occupational therapy to provide multidisciplinary approach to nonoperative treatment of spinal disorders.

The Foot and Ankle Service works in conjunction with the Podiatry Service to provide the newest techniques and modalities for the treatment of patients with foot and ankle disorders.

As part of the Department of Orthopaedics, the Pediatric Orthopaedics Unit diagnoses and treas the entire range of problems affecting the immature musculoskeletal system. Subspecialities include problems of the pediatric spine, foot and hip, birth defects and abnormalities.

Faculty physicians in the department work closely with the Department of Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy to provide the best rehabilitative care for our patients. A brace and orthotic service is also available for specialized needs.

The MGH Bone Bank, the only one of its kind in New England, Provides allograft bone for use in joint reconstruction after prosthetic failure and tumor resection.

The MGH Department of Orthopaedics is part of the Partners Department of Orthopaedics in the Partners HealthCare System.
