Some oral and maxillofacial surgery procedures are among the most commonly performed surgical procedures nationwide while others are performed rarely. In both cases, the decision to operate on a patient must include a thorough understanding of the risks and complications inherent in the procedure. Because the contributing variables can be complex and interrelated, it takes scientifically controlled inquiry to sort out the role that each variable plays in the patient’s projected outcome.

The Center for Applied Clinical Investigation (CACI) of the Mass General Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMS) was established in 2004 as both a research center and a center for training academic oral surgeons in clinical investigation techniques. Our laboratory is the universe of OMS practice and our tools are those of epidemiology, biostatistics, genetics, and evidence-based medicine. We are dedicated to understanding the variables that contribute to manageable risks and complications and to guiding oral and maxillofacial surgeons to the best outcomes based on scientific evidence.
