The Yawkey Family Foundations
A Legacy of Philanthropy
The Yawkey Family Foundations were established to serve the charitable
objectives of Thomas A. Yawkey and his wife, Jean R. Yawkey, long-time
owners of the Boston Red Sox. During their lifetime, the Yawkeys
were always deeply involved in charitable work, and their Foundations
have a long history of donating to institutions that serve, support
and have an impact on the people in the community. In particular
the Yawkeys were committed to organizations that focus on youth,
education, sports, health services, social services and conservation.
As a result, the Yawkeys' Foundations have a track record of important
contributions to this community, especially in the inner city. The
Foundations have helped support the Jimmy Fund, Rosie's Place, Massachusetts
General Hospital, the United Way, the Pine Street Inn, the Greater
Boston Food Bank, the Boys and Girls Club, and many other important
groups. The Foundations have also supported city youth programs,
including the RBI (Reviving Baseball in the Inner City), the Rookie
League, and adult programs such as the Boston Park League and the
Yawkey Baseball League.
Since their deaths, the Boards of Trustees of the Foundations have
continued the Yawkeys' legacy and have contributed more than $40
million to organizations large and small that share the Foundations'
charitable objectives. Since the sale of the Yawkey family's primary
asset, the Boston Red Sox, the Yawkey Foundations have experienced
exponential growth which will allow them to have a transformative
impact on the social issues the Yawkeys cared about.
The Board of Trustees of Jean Yawkey's Foundation, three of whom
were appointed by Mrs. Yawkey, are: John L. Harrington, William
B. Gutfarb, James G. Maguire, and Edward F. Kenney.
Yawkey Foundation I was established in 1976 by Tom Yawkey, and
Yawkey Foundation II was established in the early 1980s by Jean
Yawkey to further serve the family's charitable objectives.
