When 3-year-old Alyssa Cassarino of North Reading, Mass., became ill with leukemia, she didn’t have to face her fight alone. The daughter of Officer Frank Cassarino of the Medford Police Department, Alyssa and her family received an outpouring of support from the city’s local police and fire departments.
- In memoriam: Gordon L. Brownell, PhD
Gordon L. Brownell, PhD, an honorary physicist with the MGH Department of Radiology, died Nov. 11 following a long illness. He was 86 years old.
- Leadership Academy hosts open house
The MGH Leadership Academy hosted its fall open house Oct. 29, offering managers and supervisors an opportunity to learn about the academy’s latest course offerings, meet with instructors and network with other managers.
- SavePower! expands
Since March, the energy conservation program SavePower! has been used at the MGH, placing computer monitors into standby mode when inactive for 30 minutes. Beginning Dec. 1, this initiative will expand to computers and rollout over a two-week period.

When Dan Crane of St. Petersburg, Florida, was diagnosed with lung cancer, he and his wife Janet did not hesitate to seek out the best available cancer treatment at the MGH Cancer Center.
