A job well done: Celebrating operations support staff

diazAround the clock, members of the MGH’s operations support staff work tirelessly to keep the hospital running smoothly. Whether they are Environmental Services staff who help keep the hospital environment clean, staff from Police, Security and Outside Services who maintain safety and security around the campus or employees who fill other important service roles, their contributions are vital in helping the hospital operate on a daily basis.

On June 18, the MGH hosted its annual Operations Support Staff Day luncheon in the Bulfinch Tent to honor these special employees. More than 4,300 support staff employees were invited to the festivities, which also included the presentation of the annual Ricardo Diaz Memorial Award. Named in honor of Ricardo Diaz, an MGH employee who held several positions with MGH Environmental Services and MGH Buildings and Grounds and who tragically died in 2003 while plowing snow from the sidewalks surrounding the hospital, the award recognizes support staff employees who embody the same dedication, teamwork and work ethic that Diaz demonstrated. This year’s award was presented to Margarito Canales of the MGH Chelsea HealthCare Center’s Environmental Services.

Canales, who has worked at the MGH for six years and is beloved among his colleagues at MGH Chelsea for his enthusiasm, commitment and friendly manner, accepted his award plaque and check to the cheers of family members, colleagues and friends. His name, along with all those of this year’s nominees, will be added to the Employee Wall of Recognition on Ellison 1.
