Standing before a group of devoted MGH volunteers at this year's Volunteer Recognition Day event June 2, Patricia Rowell, co-director of the Department of Volunteer, Interpreter, Information Ambassadors and General Store Services, remarked, "Today we honor the thousands of hours and acts of kindness given daily by our volunteers who help transform the experiences of our patients and their families." Joining her at the event were Paul Bartush, co-director of the department; Peter L. Slavin, MD, MGH president; Jeanette Ives Erickson, RN, MS, FAAN, senior vice president for Patient Care and chief nurse; and Edward P. Lawrence, chair of the MGH Board of Trustees. Each thanked the MGH's volunteers, who collectively dedicated 81,195 hours to improving the experiences of patients at the MGH in 2007.

Following remarks, Bartush and Rowell called forward volunteers to accept certificates acknowledging their contributions to the hospital. Those selected for recognition were nominated by MGH staff members who supervise their daily work. This year's award recipients are: Trustees Award, Brian Tseng, MD; Jesse Harding Award, Peggy Scott; Maeve Blackman Award, Nicole Economides; Service Awards: Andrea Alberg, Maryellen Collins, Kevin Currie, Dave Drapeau, Sandra Gordon, Kieron Gyles, Caroline Irungu, Karen Lambert, Sheena Marquis, Patricia Signer, Matt Silverstein, Sally Taylor and William Zadroga.
Said Slavin to all the MGH volunteers, "You make the care we provide to our patients and their families even better. On their behalf, thank you so much for all you do."
