The Association of Women Surgeons (AWS) has honored Jennifer Lafemina, MD, a resident in the MGH Department of Surgery, with the 2008 Outstanding Resident Award. Established in 1999, the award recognizes a woman surgery resident who has outstanding leadership abilities, serves as a role model for colleagues and demonstrates overall excellence in the field. An awards ceremony will be held in San Francisco this October.

Laurence Ronan, MD, of the MGH Department of Medicine and director of the MGH's Thomas S. Durant, MD, Fellowship in Refugee Medicine, has been awarded the 2008 Dean's Community Service Lifetime Achievement Award from Harvard Medical School (HMS) for his work with the fellowship program. The award recognizes individuals who have made outstanding efforts to serve local, national and international communities and includes a $1,000 donation from HMS to the organizations represented by the honorees.

The Society of National Association Publications has awarded Richard Schrenker, systems engineering manager in the MGH Biomedical Engineering Department, a bronze medal in the category of Scholarly Publications — Feature Articles for his article "Learning from Failure: The Teachings of Petroski," which appeared in the September/October 2007 issue of Biomedical Instrumentation and Technology.
