FUN IN THE SUN: MGHers enjoy the picnic festivities.
Thousands of MGHers flocked to the Bulfinch lawn June 25 to enjoy one of the hospital community's most highly-anticipated events: the annual employee summer picnic. Hosted by Peter L. Slavin, MD, president of the MGH, the celebration featured carnival games, music and catering by MGH Nutrition and Food Services, which provided boxed lunches to thousands of hungry employees at both the daytime picnic and an event later that day for evening and night-shift staff. A special highlight of the picnic was the first-ever MGH Idol competition, the hospital's version of the popular television show "American Idol." During the contest, seven finalists — selected from among more than 40 employee contestants — performed popular songs for the crowd and judges Maryanne Spicer, director of the MGH Administrative Fellowship; Bill Banchiere, director of Environmental Services; Olako Agburu, administrative fellow; and special celebrity guest judge Wes Welker, wide receiver for the New England Patriots. Audience members voted for their favorite singers, ultimately crowning Scott Hooper of Information Systems as the first MGH Idol. The other talented finalists were Isa Katimy of Police and Security; Brandon Clarke of Nutrition and Food Services; David Maldonado of MGH Downtown; June Cottrell of MGH Beacon Hill; Michelle Dorn of Immunopathology; and Christine Joyce of the Cardiac Catheterization Lab.
