A last legacy: Mongan honored with portrait

Mongan portrait unveilingMGH senior leadership and special guests joined James J. Mongan, MD, and his wife, Jean, Sept. 26 in the Trustees Room for the unveiling of an oil painting of Mongan, who served as MGH president from 1996 to 2002 before succeeding Samuel O. Thier, MD, as president and chief executive officer of Partners HealthCare. The portrait, painted by Richard Whitney, joins several other oil paintings of MGH leadership outside the Trustees Room on Bulfinch 2. Both Whitney and his wife, Sandy Sherman, joined guests at the ceremony.

"It is an honor to celebrate and recognize Jim's MGH leadership in a very tangible, lasting and fitting way," said Peter L. Slavin, MD, MGH president. "Jim is not only a brilliant leader, but he also is a kind man, an extraordinary administrator and an inspired visionary. We thank him and his wife, Jean, who have been – and continue to be – very special members of the MGH family."

Many longtime colleagues and friends, including W. Gerald Austen, MD, chairman of the MGH Chiefs' Council and surgeon-in-chief emeritus, along with Slavin and Thier, were among those who gave remarks at the event honoring Mongan for his years of service. Mongan thanked those at the event and the MGH for the special honor acknowledging his dedication to the hospital.
