The MGH Blood Donor Center will be the scene of some friendly competition when it kicks-off the Fourth Annual Medical Service Blood Drive Challenge May 1. During the monthlong challenge, MGH physicians, nurses and allied health professionals will compete against one another in an effort to increase donations at the center during the late spring, a time when donation rates are low. The team with the highest percentage of donors will be declared the winner.
Allan Moore, MD, a fellow in the Diabetes Unit, will lead the physician team, and Susan Morash, RN, nursing director for White 11, will head up the medical floors team comprising nurses, unit service associates, operations associates and patient care associates. Tanya Milosh Zinkus, program administrator in the Department of Medicine, will lead this year's challenge newcomers, a team of administrative staff from the Department of Medicine.

All three leaders are excited to begin this year's competition. "The Medical Services Blood Drive Challenge is a special time of year, with physicians, nurses and staff throughout the Medical Service coming together for a common cause — helping our patients through blood donation," says Moore. Morash adds, "This spirited competition has proven to be a great way to unite our staff by helping save lives. This year will be bigger and better than ever." Milosh Zinkus agrees, saying, "The administration team hopes to bring in new donors who, although they may not work directly with patients, make contributions that support and strengthen the patient care network."
A double-points day May 1 can help participants earn a head start in the competition by offering two points for every team member who donates. Throughout the challenge, individuals who are ineligible to give blood may designate a "buddy" to donate on their behalf.
The Blood Donor Center is located in the Gray Lobby and open for whole blood donations Tuesday through Thursday, from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm; and Friday, from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. Walk-ins are welcome. For more information, call (617) 726-8177.
