On April 23, administrative support staff from across the hospital were honored at the annual Administrative Secretarial/Clerical Support Staff Day, which also included the presentation of the 11th annual Pamela J. Ellis Memorial Secretarial Award. Peter L. Slavin, MD, MGH president; Jeff Davis, senior vice president for Human Resources; David Torchiana, MD, MGPO chairman and CEO; George Baker, MD, of the Bulfinch Medical Group and founding member of the award selection committee; and 2007 winner Margo Johnson, of the MGH Chelsea HealthCare Center's Adolescent and Pediatric Medicine Unit, gave remarks and presented this year's award to Chester "Chet" Krupkowski, operations associate in the Blake 8 Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU).
Given annually to a member of the MGH support staff in recognition of National Administrative Professionals' Day, the award is named in honor of Pamela J. Ellis, an executive secretary at the MGH who died in October 1996 at the age of 31. The $1,000 award was established in 1997 to honor employees who exhibit the same dedication, strong work ethic and commitment to excellence demonstrated by Ellis.

Described by his nominators as "always kind and approachable" and "impeccably patient," Krupkowski, who works the night shift in the SICU, was touched by the honor. In his remarks, he thanked his wife for her support as well as his colleagues on Blake 8. "This means so much to me," he said. "I want to thank you all very much."
Krupkowski was selected as this year's winner from a list of 67 nominees, whose names will be included on a framed honor roll to be displayed alongside the Pamela J. Ellis Award plaque on the Employee Wall of Recognition on the first floor of the Ellison Building.
