The MGH and New England Organ Bank (NEOB) together hosted Celebrate the Gift of Life May 4. Nearly 100 people attended the event that was held to honor individuals instrumental in organ and tissue donation at the MGH. Guests of honor included MGH organ donors, families of deceased MGH organ and tissue donors from 2007, along with the many staff members involved in organ and tissue donation.
Following remarks by Jay A. Fishman, MD, MGH Transplant Center associate director, and Richard Luskin, NEOB chief executive officer, several patients shared their unique transplant stories, including Betty Harrington, who received a double lung transplant in 1991 and later received a kidney from her son — a living donor. Today, both Betty and her son are leading healthy lives.
On display at the reception was a series of posters designed by students from Blue Hills Technical High School in Canton. The class had created the displays to increase awareness of organ and tissue donation. The top six posters had been selected by NEOB and were displayed at the MGH in April — National Donate Life Month.
