research program opportunities

The Partners Neurology Program is dedicated to training the future leaders of Neurology and fostering a strong knowledge and skill in performing research. We encourage a diverse group of residents, some with strong backgrounds in research and others with minimal prior research training to participate in research endeavors during residency. For some, this experience is crucial for developing a career in research and our program has the resources, opporunties and mentorship structure to launch such a career.

The Neurology Faculty is committed to mentoring residents in clinical, translational, basic science research. At the beginning of the PGY-2, each resident is paired with a research mentor who meets with the resident regularly. This mentor may continue as a research mentor throughout residency or may facilitate new mentorship relationships as the resident's interests grow and change. The residency program has abundant elective time in the PGY-3 and PGY-4 years, that may be used for dedicated research time. In addition, the residents meet with the residency program staff on a biannual basis at which time career development is also discussed.

The Partners Neurology Residency Program exists in a dynamic and stimulating research environment. Both BWH and MGH have strong research programs in neurology and are each the second most funded departments for research in the hospital by dollar amount and the highest per capita. Collaborations across departments and the many first-class institutions in the Boston area are encouraged.

In addition we are recipients of an R-25 NIH award that allows our residents to apply for funding for 2 years on a mentored research project, at least 6 months of which occur during the residency and the remainder during fellowship.

Our residents have been successful applicants in a wide range of research grants during and after residency including:
  • AAN Career Development Award
  • Clinical Investigator Training Program
  • Harvard Clinical Scholars Program
  • K awards from the NIH
