Dr. Zhu’s research interests are in necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) and the mechanism by which probiotics are able to prevent NEC in human intestinal models. She is a member of the team led by Dr. Allan Walker that identified immaturity of the innate immune system as an important predisposing factor in the onset of NEC.

Dr. Zhu is currently investigating the role of probiotics in human models of developing intestine for probiotics ability to enhance the innate immune response and prevent changes associated with NEC.
