Inpatient MedicineBecause MGH is a major academic referral center in Boston, New England’s most populous city, it provides the housestaff with exposure to a patient population of enormous diversity. The MGH Department of Medicine’s General Medical Service consists of two main inpatient teaching services: the Bigelow Service and the Ellison Service. In addition, there are three intensive care units: the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU), the Coronary Care Unit (CCU), and the Cardiac Step Down Unit (SDU). Other inpatient rotations include the Emergency Department, the medical consultation service, the oncology service, and the inpatient service at Newton Wellesley Hospital.
