Clinician Educator ServiceCommitted to innovative educational strategies, excellence in clinical care, and lifelong learning, the Department of Medicine established the Clinician Educator Service in 2005 to help supervise inpatient clinical care and to provide education and support for housestaff and medical students on the inpatient services at MGH. The clinician educators are all practicing academic hospitalists who are part of the core teaching faculty of the Department of Medicine and have full-time academic appointments at Harvard Medical School. Each member of the group attends on the Bigelow Service an average of 16 weeks annually, the Medicine Consult Service for 8-12 weeks per year, and the Ellison Service for 4-8 weeks per year. During the past two years the group has developed and implemented a formal consultation curriculum for residents rotating on the Medicine Consult Service. Since 2007, the group has provided a two week elective rotation devoted to clinical education for residents interested in this specific career pathway. In addition to the inpatient wards at MGH, the clinician educators teach in other educational venues including pre-clinical Harvard Medical School courses, didactic programs, and Continuing Medical Education courses. During the months when individual clinician educators are not on service, members of the group pursue scholarly projects, curriculum development, and systems issues for the inpatient service. All of these efforts are open to resident participation. The group also has a very active internal academic program which includes Academic Hospitalists Journal Club, Physical Diagnosis Review, Academic Hospitalists Case Conference, and Education/Development Conference. Residents are welcome to attend these conferences as well.
