Academic Hospitalist Service

The Academic Hospitalist Service (AHS), founded in July 2010 by the MGH Department of Medicine, consists of a dedicated core of hospitalist physicians and nurse practitioners that seek to provide exceptional direct clinical care to complex medical inpatients. Initially developed to assist with care of high acuity patients admitted from the MGH Emergency Department, the AHS is composed of physicians who hold academic appointments at Harvard Medical School and nurse practitioners with expertise in managing critically ill patients. The AHS clinicians are committed to care delivery innovation with a quality and safety focus leading to best practices in patient care. The service also embraces general medical education through teaching of sub-interns during their clinical training.

In addition to their role as clinicians providing direct patient care, AHS physicians serve as attendings on resident house-staff services throughout the year (4-8 weeks annually on the Bigelow Service, 4-6 weeks annually on the Ellison Service). AHS physicians provide formal mentorship to MGH residents, facilitate resident training courses at the SIM Center and serve as preceptors for Harvard Medical School pre-clinical courses. In addition to their clinical and educational endeavors, physicians on the Academic Hospitalist Service have a dedicated percent effort for clinical research or quality and safety activities.
