Recruitment Initiatives
MAO works with all 21 residency programs at MGH in their recruiting efforts. As a result of these collaborations, the diversity of residents training at the MGH continues to increase.
-
National Residency Recruitment Fairs. MGH URM residents serve as ambassadors for the MGH, MAO, and their departments at Student National Medical Association meetings and other residency fairs around the country.

- Networking Receptions
for URM Residency Applicants. During the MGH residency recruitment season, MAO organizes several receptions for URM applicants interviewed by MGH residency training programs. The reception provides an opportunity for applicants to meet URM MGH residents, fellows and faculty in a more relaxed setting and receive a perspective on training at the MGH and living in the Boston area.

“Residents really appreciate all that MAO does for us at MGH. When I was interviewing at MGH, the MAO dinner and my meeting with residents and faculty convinced me to rank the Medicine program highly. I am delighted that I am training at MGH.”
Claude Alabre, MD, Internal Medicine resident, Class of 2010 |

Retention Initiatives
MAO has worked closely with many departments to design mentorship and career development programs for URM housestaff during their training at MGH. MAO also sponsors welcoming receptions and networking events to help build a sense of community within MGH. MAO has a staff person - a manager of trainee affairs - dedicated to providing career guidance to residents and fellows while at MGH.

“As one of the few African-American residents in a small department, the MAO staff has been an invaluable resource for me this past year. MAO has enhanced my experience as a resident by providing me with personal connections to other URM residents in the larger community, who I would have never met on my own. Being part of a community is a key to our success as residents.”
Audley Osbourne, MD, MGH Urology Resident, Class of 2010 |

The Organization of Minority Residents and
Fellows (OMRF) is another resource that plays a crucial role in the life of URM residents and fellows at MGH. The OMRF offers opportunities to socialize and network among peers, enhance career development, and become involved in the larger Harvard and Boston communities.
