A Message From the Director

Almost everyone knows someone who is affected by a mental health issue. The needs created by mental health issues are far-reaching, and can shape an entire family, not just the affected individual. But with early detection, appropriate diagnosis and treatment, and the support of family, friends, and the community, mental health issues can be successfully treated and managed.

We invite you to use this web site as your guide to what to expect when you or someone you love are affected by a mental health condition. The web site takes you through six stages of the mental health journey - awareness, the search for help, diagnosis, considering treatment options, finding support, and living, loving and coping – and provides you with authoritative information and resources, as well as compelling stories, for each stage of the journey.

In the videos that accompany each stage of the journey, you’ll hear individuals and family members talking about their mental health struggles and the importance of family and friends in their, or their loved one’s, recovery. You’ll also learn from our mental health experts about the importance of accurate diagnosis, appropriate treatment, and caring support as first steps toward meaningful recovery.

This site was created by professionals at Massachusetts General Hospital, one of the world’s leading research and teaching hospitals. Clinicians nation-wide have ranked the Massachusetts General Hospital Department of Psychiatry #1 among hospital departments of psychiatry since 1996 (US News & World Report). Because our researchers and clinicians are at the leading edge of research and patient care, we’re committed to providing you with information about mental health that’s trustworthy, relevant, and research-based.

We hope this web site helps you find support for the journey toward wellness. For more information, contact us at (617) 724-8318 or moodandanxiety@partners.org.
