Understanding Anxiety and Stress: Treating Illness and Supporting Resilience

Saturday, February 11, 2012

The Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Department of Psychiatry invites you to attend the 2012 symposium on Understanding Anxiety and Stress: Treating Illness and Supporting Resilience.

Feelings of stress and anxiety are common. For many of us, managing stress and supporting our natural strengths and resilience can result in significant improvements in quality of life. When anxiety is intense or persistent such that it interferes with daily functioning, as occurs in panic disorder, additional psychotherapy and/or medication treatments may be indicated. Anxiety disorders are amongst the most common psychiatric disorders, and commonly co-occur with depression and alcohol abuse. This program will focus on a review of the difference between stress, anxiety, and specific anxiety disorders, highlighting up-to-date research, which improved our understanding and treatment of these conditions. In addition, mind-body strategies to manage stress and anxiety that can be applied in daily life will be discussed.

These interactive lectures represent a patient-oriented, yet scientifically-based program that will give you straightforward, practical, cutting-edge information to help you optimize your current treatment. The faculty speakers will be available to answer your questions immediately after their presentations.

The symposium will also include presentations by members of a patient and family panel, who will give a first-hand account of their experiences.
