Welcome

The Massachusetts General Hospital Department of Psychiatry invites you to attend the 2010 Spring Symposium on Mental Health and Wellness. This program is for the families and friends of adolescents with substance use disorders.

Specialists from the Department of Psychiatry will share their knowledge about new treatment approaches, and the various factors that contribute to the development of substance use disorders.

Substance use disorders occur most frequently during adolescence and early adulthood. During this life stage, a number of factors are responsible for increasing the risk for the onset of these potentially devastating disorders. New research indicates that while youth are particularly prone to substance-related and psychiatric disorders, they have difficulty recognizing when they have a problem and often lack the motivation for change. Research also suggests that the earlier an individual begins treatment for these conditions the faster they can recover. However, youth are particularly difficult to engage in treatment and often do not follow through with appropriate therapy. Few recovery-specific social resources for this age-group exist. The combination of all these factors presents distinct treatment and recovery challenges.

Please join us to learn about the risk factors that contribute to the development of substance use disorders in adolescents, and to find out how new research findings are shaping treatment approaches.

We hope this program helps you and your family in the journey toward wellness.
