Staff

Karen Blumenfeld, MSW, MBA, Director
As Director of the Mood & Anxiety Disorders Institute Resource Center, Ms. Blumenfeld directs community education programming for the Massachusetts General Hospital Department of Psychiatry. She has over 30 years of experience in program development and management, management consulting, public policy, and international development in the United States and India.

Jessica Solodar, Senior Writer
Ms. Solodar spent 20 years as a writer and public relations consultant in the computer industry before devoting herself to mental health education and advocacy. She writes about mental health issues and is active in advocacy organizations for children’s mental health and special education.

Sean Ward, MBA, Financial Manager
Mr. Ward manages finances for the MADI Resource Center as well as other programs in the Massachusetts General Hospital Department of Psychiatry.

Rebecca M. Ametrano, Research Assistant
Ms. Ametrano is interested in anxiety disorders in adult populations as well as topics in behavioral medicine.

Christine Kansky, Research Assistant
Ms. Kansky is interested in the psychopharmacology of adult mood and anxiety disorders, particularly bipolar disorder.

Medical Advisors

Jeff Bostic, MD, EdD
Dr. Bostic is an Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. He is Director of the School Psychiatry Program at Massachusetts General Hospital, where he specializes in mental health issues in the school environment. Dr. Bostic participated in creation of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Practice Parameters for School Consultation, setting the national standards for the field. Dr. Bostic was instrumental in creation of the web site www.schoolpsychiatry.org which assists families, educators, and clinicians with mental health issues in the school environment. Dr. Bostic is Medical Director of the Massachusetts Child Psychiatry Access Project site at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Mark Pollack, MD
Dr. Pollack is a Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. He is Director of the Center for Anxiety and Traumatic Stress Disorders at Massachusetts General Hospital, where he specializes in the course, pathophysiology and treatment of patients with anxiety disorders and associated co-morbidities, development of novel pharmacologic agents for mood and anxiety disorders, uses of combined cognitive-behavioral and pharmacologic therapies for treatment refractory patients, presentation and treatment of anxiety in the medical setting, and the pathophysiology and treatment of substance abuse. He serves on numerous editorial and advisory boards, and is Chair of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Anxiety Disorders Association of America.

Gary Sachs, MD
Dr. Sachs is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. He is Director of the Bipolar Clinic and Research Program at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Sachs served as Principal Investigator of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) Systematic Treatment Enhancement Program for Bipolar Disorder (STEP-BD), the largest treatment study ever conducted for bipolar disorder. His research interests include psychopharmacology, chronobiology, clinical trial methodology and recurrent mood disorders. Dr. Sachs serves on many editorial and advisory boards. He is Chair of the National Alliance on Mental Illness Scientific Advisory Board and serves on the Scientific Advisory Board of the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance.

Steve Targum, MD
Dr. Targum is a Consultant to the Massachusetts General Hospital Department of Psychiatry. He also serves as Executive-in-Residence for Oxford Bioscience Partners, Chief Medical Officer for BrainCells Inc., and Chief Medical Advisor for Prana Biotechnology Ltd. Dr. Targum’s areas of expertise include the design and implementation of clinical trials for new psychotropic drugs and the progression of drug development from concept to approval to launch. He has extensive experience in conducting clinical trials in therapeutic areas including anxiety, depression, mania, schizophrenia, and Alzheimer’s disease.

Anthony Weiss, MD, MSc
Dr. Weiss is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. He is Director of Quality Management for the Massachusetts General Hospital Department of Psychiatry and Associate Director of Health Services Research for Partners Psychiatry and Mental Health. Dr. Weiss specializes in improving the quality and safety of mental health care through clinical quality improvement, translational research, and the education of patients, families, students, and fellow clinicians. His earlier scientific work focused on the use of brain imaging technology (including structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging) to better understand the underlying neurobiology responsible for the memory abnormalities seen in patients with schizophrenia.

Elissa Freud, MSW
Ms. Freud, one of the founders of the MADI Resource Center, is a ceramic artist with experience in clinical social work, research, and consulting on policy for persons with developmental disabilities and chronic mental illness.

RoseMary B. Fuss, MA, MBA
Ms. Fuss, a suicide survivor, has a background in teaching and pension investment management. She serves as a trustee of the Tommy Fuss Fund and Lasell College.

Melissa C. Murphy
Ms. Murphy is a former public relations and corporate communications professional with experience in both agency and corporate environments. She has managed and implemented PR programs and branding initiatives.

Steve Willis
Mr. Willis, one of the founders of the MADI Resource Center, serves as a consultant to a number of start-up companies, to which he provides financial, management, and technical support. He co-founded and directed technology at several Internet-related companies.

Mark Zanger
Mr. Zanger is a writer, editor, and media relations specialist. He is both a mental health consumer and a National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI) Family-to-Family teacher. He serves on the board of an advocacy group for young people with mental health issues as well as an organization that provides reading software to the disabled.
