John Knowles (1926-1979) was born in Chicago, Illinois. He received his AB from Harvard College in 1947, and his MD in 1951 from the Washington University School of Medicine. That same year he became an Intern in Medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital, and between 1952 and 1959, Dr. Knowles moved through the ranks, holding the titles of Assistant Resident in Medicine, Resident of Medicine, and Chief Resident of Medicine. During that same period of time, Dr. Knowles served as a Teaching Fellow in Medicine, and later an Instructor in Medicine at Harvard Medical School. However, from 1953 to 1955, he left Boston to serve the United States Navy as a Lieutenant, M.C., and Officer-in-Charge of the Cardiopulmonary Laboratory at the United States Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, Virginia.
At the MGH, Dr. Knowles was appointed Chief of the Pulmonary Disease Unit in 1959. Between 1961 and 1964, he worked as an Assistant and Associate Physician, and from 1962 to 1972 he was the General Director of the MGH. At Harvard Medical School, Dr. Knowles became a Lecturer on Medicine in 1963, and he was a Research Associate to the Program on Technology and Society in 1967 for the college. From 1969 to 1972 he served the medical school as a Professor of Medicine.
During the time of the Vietnam War, Dr. Knowles headed an investigation that concluded that nearly one-third of the Vietnamese people contracted tuberculosis, 80% of the people suffered from a type of worms, and that the regime in Saigon spent less than 1% of its budget on health care, a figure less than that of any other country.
Dr. Knowles published 5 books and has more than 25 representative articles to his name. He is also the member of many medical organizations, including the American Public Health Association, American Federation for Clinical Research, and Greater Boston Hospital Council. Dr. Knowles served as the President of the Rockefeller Foundation from 1972 to 1979. The John H. Knowles Fellowship Fund, established at the MGH by the foundation, helps students pursuing nursing, social work, and allied health fields.
