Weight Loss Surgery Information
The Massachusetts General Hospital Weight Center was founded in 1999 and provides, among other things, state-of-the-art surgery for obesity. The multidisciplinary center offers a variety of services, including:
- Comprehensive evaluation for obesity
- Pediatric weight loss evaluation and programs
- Adult weight loss programs
- Research protocols for new devices and medications
Surgeons who work on the Weight Center team are dedicated to the team approach to the management of obesity. The team includes nurses, nutritionists, psychologists, pediatricians, bariatric internists and surgeons. Weight loss surgery patients must be referred for obesity surgery directly to the Mass General Weight Center by their primary care physician. The initial Weight Center evaluation is a comprehensive evaluation by a nutritionist, psychologist and internist. Surgical evaluation is only initiated after the patient has completed a comprehensive medical evaluation. In this way, we provide the most integrated and safest program in New England.
The operations offered in 2008 included:
- Open Roux en Y Gastric Bypass
- Laparoscopic Roux en Y Gastric Bypass
- Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding
- Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy (when covered by insurance)
- Revision of Bariatric Procedures
- Hernia Repair and Panniculectomy
Surgeons who work at the Mass General Weight Center are also general and gastrointestinal surgeons. They perform not only bariatric procedures, but are experts in other areas of general surgery as well. Our group performs over 300 bariatric procedures a year. We also have programs for patients who have already had bariatric surgery but may be suffering from complications or need to have regular follow-up.
