Business of Life™ Workshop

Facilitator: Allison Rimm, President, Allison Rimm and Associates, LLP and   former Senior VP of Strategic Planning and Information Management at MGH

In this highly experiential workshop, attendees learned how to apply the principles of strategic planning to achieve their personal and professional goals while deriving greater fulfillment from their lives. They learned a systematic process to examine their personal skills, talents and passions and to bring who they truly ARE to all that they DO.

Speaker: David S. Bickham, PhD, Center on Media and Child Health Children's Hospital, Boston
This discussion helped attendees learn more about how exposure to various forms of media affect growing children. Topics included setting "screen-time" limits, protecting children from negative media influence, and modeling appropriate use of media.

This session helped participants develop their own leadership style, build their confidence and improve their team communication.

After Maternity Leave: Caring for Your Infant and Your Career

Three faculty panelists discussed how they transitioned back to their careers in basic science, clinical research and patient duties. Attendees asked questions and shared ideas about balancing their infants' needs, their new role as a parent, and their busy careers.

This panel discussion featured four MGH women inventors who discussed their experience moving ideas through the patent process, with the help of Partners Research Ventures and Licensing Office.

"Meet and Greet" Networking Breakfast with Dr. Nancy J. Tarbell

Attendees heard from Dr. Tarbell about her career path and gained insights to help with their own career trajectories. They also learned more about the Office for Women's Careers and spent time with other women faculty colleagues.

Having It All or Wanting What We Have

Dr. Erin Tracy led a discussion of the choices working parents make to balance their family responsibilities and their careers. Most working parents have found that it is not possible to "have it all," but is it possible to take an "off-ramp" from your career in academic medicine to achieve family-career balance, and maintain your career's growth and possibilities for future "on-ramping"? Attendees shared their views and ideas, and learned from and supported colleagues.

The Claflin awards are designed to provide bridge funding for junior faculty to sustain research productivity during the child-rearing years with the intention of advancing women in academic medicine. This discussion covered the eligibility requirements for the awards, tips on putting together the best application, resources to help one apply, and how the award can help advance one's career.
