1. MGPA Day Trip to Georges Island for Postdocs and Families!! on Aug 24

When: Saturday, August 24, 2013, 11:00am
Where: Georges Island , Boston Harbor
What to Bring: Your friends and family, a picnic lunch, money for the ferry

Mass General Postdoc Association (MGPA) has organized a day trip to Georges Island for MGH postdocs and their families. Spend a fun and relaxed afternoon enjoying the island breezes, exploring the fort, and getting to know other postdocs. There will be a lot of fun, also playing volleyball and Frisbee! There will also be a free concert with bands from Boston's Berklee College of Music starting at 2:00 pm! Friends and families are welcome. Be sure to bring a windbreaker jacket as the ferry ride can be cold; and a flashlight if you want to explore the old fort. Don't miss this opportunity to make the most of what is left of summer!

The group will depart from Long Wharf North in Boston at 11:00 am. The ferry tickets can be purchased online or at the wharf at a rate of $15 for adults, $9 for children (ages 411), and free for kids under 4 years. For more information about the tickets, pricing and schedule, please click here.

2. MGPA Monthly Planning Committee meeting on Aug 28-
    Presented by The Mass General Postdoc Association

The Mass General Postdoc Association (MGPA), with the support of the ORCD, offers career development, networking and social events specifically tailored for postdoctoral research fellows. All MGH postdocs are welcome to join the MGPA. Attend this meeting to help plan upcoming events and share your ideas for future events and initiatives. Active planning committee members are eligible for elected positions on the MGPA board. Note: Beginning this month, the MGPA will alternate the meeting site between the Charlestown Navy Yard and Main Campus. The August meeting is at CNY.

4. Achieving Independence from Your Mentor on Sept 11-
    Faculty Development Seminar: Career Advancement Series

Is it necessary to "cut ties" with your mentor in order to convince funding agencies, journal editors and colleagues that you are independent? In most cases the answer is no. In this panel discussion you will learn how others have navigated the path to an independent faculty position while continuing collaborations with their mentors. Geared toward junior faculty, this discussion will help you form your own plan to achieve independence with positive results.

In honor of National Postdoc Appreciation Week, the ORCD would like to acknowledge Research Fellows for their scientific contributions to the MGH research enterprise. The world-class research carried out at MGH would not be possible without the dedication and hard work of our 1100+ postdoctoral research fellows.

We invite all MGH postdoctoral research fellows to join us for an Ice Cream Social to thank you for your hard work.

Call for applications: Industry Exploration Program

Are you curious about car7eers in the biomedical/biotech/pharmaceutical industry? Join the Industry Exploration Program (IEP)! Whether you are a senior postdoc ready to send applications to industry, or a new postdoc who is wondering what these careers are like, the IEP can help you. Founded by MGH research fellows, the IEP organizes group visits for postdocs to local companies. When you spend the day at a company, you will have the opportunity to learn more about that company, its work culture and research, and about industry science in general.
