2. REMINDER: Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) Series: "Peer Review" on February 16 -

This session fulfills one hour of the RCR education requirement for those researchers on NIH training grants. All are welcome, but space is limited and registration preference will be given to those with RCR training obligations.

This seminar will discuss the responsibilities of scientists invited to review manuscripts for journals. You will learn about and discuss the following topics:
  - Overview of the peer review process
  - Guidelines from journals and unwritten rules
  - Ethical considerations in peer review

1. Communication Series - Scholarly Writing Seminar Series for faculty beginning on Mar 7 -

This 3-part seminar series will help faculty improve their scholarly writing. The course will be most valuable for those who desire to improve their scientific writing and productivity:
       • Clarify interests and goals
       • Select a target audience for writing
       • Create an outline
       • Avoid obsessive perfectionism
       • Understand the peer-review process
       • Communicate effectively with journal editors
The process used in this series will serve as a template for future academic projects.

3. CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: 2012 Claflin Distinguished Scholar Awards due Mar 15 -

Two-Year Awards for Junior Faculty Women Investigators in Basic and Clinical Research

Applications are invited for Claflin Distinguished Scholar Awards from the Executive Committee On Research (ECOR) and the Office for Women’s Careers. Each award includes funding of $50,000 per year in direct costs, plus 15% for indirect costs. Funds may be used to support a technician, postdoctoral fellow or graduate student and supplies. Funds cannot be used for support of the investigator’s salary, except with specific approval of ECOR. Eligibility and other award information are provided below.

2. The Clinical Research Program presents: Workshops for Investigators

The MGH Clinical Research Program Education Unit hosts a continuing education series that focuses on "hot topics" in clinical research on an institutional, local and national level. CME, CEU and RCR credits are offered for many of their educational offerings.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

1. CALL FOR ABSTRACTS: SAC 2012 Scientific Poster Session due Feb 8 -

The SAC 2012 Scientific Poster Session will be held Wednesday, April 18, 2012 from 11 am to 1:45 pm. The submission deadline for abstracts is Wednesday, February 8, 2012.

Ten $1,000 Awards of Excellence for Scientific Meeting Travel will be awarded:

    5 for Clinical Research
    5 for Basic Research

2. CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: MGH Physician/Scientist Development Award due Mar 15 -

Applications for grants are invited by the MGH Multicultural Affairs Office (MAO) and the Executive Committee on Research (ECOR). The four-year award is for $30,000 per year, plus 15% for indirect costs. The $30,000 award has two components: a minimum of $15,000 may be used for laboratory assistance and non-capital equipment and a maximum of $15,000 to repay educational loans.

The MGH Physician/Scientist Development Award is designed for MD and/or PhD investigators at MGH who are considered underrepresented in academic medicine (URM). This Award is intended to provide transitional funding for support in the development of physician/scientists underrepresented in academic medicine, and thereby increase opportunities for URM researchers to advance to senior positions in academic medicine at MGH. The Multicultural Affairs Office will evaluate the need for this Award on a regular basis.
