1. LAST CHANCE TO REGISTER: Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) Series: "Peer Review"
    on Feb 16 -

This session fulfills one hour of the RCR education requirement for those researchers on NIH training grants. All are welcome, but space is limited and registration preference will be given to those with RCR training obligations.

This seminar will discuss the responsibilities of scientists invited to review manuscripts for journals. You will learn about and discuss the following topics:
  - Overview of the peer review process
  - Guidelines from journals and unwritten rules
  - Ethical considerations in peer review

2. REMINDER: Communication Series - Scholarly Writing Seminar Series for faculty beginning
    on Mar 7 -

This 3-part seminar series will help faculty improve their scholarly writing. The course will be most valuable for those who desire to improve their scientific writing and productivity:
       • Clarify interests and goals
       • Select a target audience for writing
       • Create an outline
       • Avoid obsessive perfectionism
       • Understand the peer-review process
       • Communicate effectively with journal editors
The process used in this series will serve as a template for future academic projects.

4. CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: 2012 Claflin Distinguished Scholar Awards due Mar 15 -

Two-Year Awards for Junior Faculty Women Investigators in Basic and Clinical Research

Applications are invited for Claflin Distinguished Scholar Awards from the Executive Committee On Research (ECOR) and the Office for Women’s Careers. Each award includes funding of $50,000 per year in direct costs, plus 15% for indirect costs. Funds may be used to support a technician, postdoctoral fellow or graduate student and supplies. Funds cannot be used for support of the investigator’s salary, except with specific approval of ECOR. Eligibility and other award information are provided below.

5. SAVE THE DATE: Negotiation Series Two-Part Seminar on April 9 -

Part I: Negotiation Essentials- 1 to 3 pm

This seminar will focus on the structure of negotiation by reviewing a systematic approach on preparing to negotiate. A case study example will be used to guide the participants through this process. This interactive workshop to help you understand the barriers and strategies to successful negotiations.

Part II: Dealing with Challenging Negotiation Behaviors- 3:15 to 5:15 pm

   Prerequisite: Negotiation Essentials

This seminar, for those who have participated in Part I of the Negotiation Series, will build on the framework from Negotiation Essentials. This interactive workshop will offer tools and advice on how to handle negotiations when the "other" side is using difficult tactics.

FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: Minority Faculty Development Award Program (MFDAP) due Mar 15 -

The purpose of the MFDAP is to increase opportunities for URM faculty to advance to senior positions in academic medicine and leadership at MGH. Each award provides $120,000 over four years and is designed for MGH-appointed faculty pursuing different career goals.

MGH Physician-Scientist Development Award (PSDA) -
The MGH Physician-Scientist Development Award is designed for URM fellows or faculty pursuing a career as a physician-scientist. Funded by the MGH Executive Committee on Research.

MGH Clinician-Teacher Development Award -
The MGH Clinician-Teacher Development Award is designed for URM faculty pursuing a career as a clinician teacher, community leader or administrator. Funded by the President’s Office and the Massachusetts General Physicians Organization. The CTDA eligibility requirements have been expanded this year to include mid-career faculty, as well.
