Letter from the Director

JB

Welcome to the Disparities Solutions Center website, and thank you for your interest in learning about our efforts to eliminate racial and ethnic disparities in healthcare locally and nationally.

It is truly an honor and a privilege to direct the Disparities Solutions Center—an exciting, one-of-a-kind effort that I am certain will make its presence known. My dedicated, talented team and I take the responsibility of running the Center very seriously, because we know lives hang in the balance. We can and should do more to make sure our healthcare system delivers the highest quality of care to all patients, regardless of their race, ethnicity, culture, or language proficiency. In fact, we can no longer wait, and the time for action is now. The Disparities Solutions Center, through its balance of service and scholarship, strives to be the catalyst that brings practical strategies to eliminate disparities directly to key healthcare stakeholders—including health plans, hospitals, provider organizations, cities and states, foundations, and industry leaders—and to answer key policy and practice-relevant questions that can pave the way for action to eliminate disparities.

The last few years have brought progress toward addressing disparities, primarily through greater awareness of the issue locally and nationally. It is now time to jump in—to create and test disparities solutions—and this is the need we hope to fill. Our presence should help move us past the common concern, "We know disparities exist, but we don't know what to do about it." We will help you do something about it. Please take a few minutes to review our website to go through a list of our projects, partners, and progress to date. Ultimately, given the issues we will are addressing, our goal is to not only improve the care for minority patients, but for all citizens of Boston, the state of Massachusetts, and the United States.

Thank you once again, and we look forward to working with you in the near future.

Sincerely,

Joseph R. Betancourt, MD, MPH
