Enrico Cagliero, MD

MGH Diabetes Center
Assistant Professor of Medicine
Harvard Medical School

ecagliero@partners.org

Dr. Cagliero completed his internship and residency at the University of California, San Diego, and his fellowship in Endocrinology at the Massachusetts General Hospital. He then became an independent investigator at Harvard Medical School in 1990 and worked on the cellular mechanisms responsible for the vascular complications of diabetes.

He joined the Diabetes Center at Massachusetts General Hospital in 1995, where he is now dividing his time between a busy clinical practice and his clinical research efforts. He is the director of the MGH General Clinical Research Center Core Laboratory.

Dr. Cagliero is involved in different aspects of clinical diabetes research. He is currently studying the role of insulin resistance on cardiovascular disease in type 2 diabetes, and conducting a clinical trial on the role of thiazolidinediones in reducing heart disease in diabetes.

He is also interested in novel therapies for diabetes and specifically on islet transplantation, being in charge of the clinical trial unit of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Center for Islet Transplantation at Harvard Medical School.

He is also collaborating with the General Medicine Division on assessing and improving the care for type 2 diabetic patients in primary care. For these studies he has worked at designing diabetes management applications (web-based, designed in collaboration with the Laboratory of Computer Sciences) and tested them in randomized trials.
