Dermatologists have relied on images as diagnostic aids for centuries. The recent advent of low cost digital cameras combined with improved telecommunications and computing infrastructure have allowed teledermatology to become a reality.
The teledermatology system at the Department of Dermatology is an easy to access, web-based system that maximizes the efficiency of both the provider requesting a consult and the dermatologist. Easy browser-based forms allow for input of history and images associated with a case.
Our service standard is to have a diagnostic and therapeutic plan to the requesting provider within two business days. In clinical trials, we found diagnostic concordance to be high and that 97% of cases could be interpreted remotely.
We can also advise on camera selection as well as computing telecommunications hook ups.
What is required? An ability to acquire cutaneous images and digitize them, through a digital camera or through a film/slide digitizer. A PC (pentium 133 or greater, Windows 95 or 98 with Internet Explorer 4.x and Microsoft Media Player) and a stable Internet connection.
We are able to help with advice on Internet Service. Also, for higher resolution video, a high bandwidth connection such as a cable modem, DSL or ISDN is recommended.
