This Center is comprised of investigators at the Massachusetts General Hospital, the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The MGH is a major teaching affiliate of the Harvard Medical School. In addition to its dedication to the missions of patient care and training, the MGH includes a vigorous basic and clinical research program. The Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center is another major teaching hospital affiliate of the Harvard Medical School, located approximately two miles from the MGH main campus. Members of the Department of Comparative Medicine at MIT became actively engaged as Center investigators, in conjunction with their external research efforts focused on the role of Helicobacter and other microbial species in intestinal tract inflammation. Dr. John Rioux, a member of the MIT-Whitehead Genome Center, has joined the CSIBD attracted by the resources of the Clinical/Tissue Core and opportunities for collaboration to pursue his well established interest in the genetics of IBD in addition to the enormous core genomic facilities of that center.
The configuration of this Center formed by the MGH, BIDMC and MIT reflects the existing close interaction of research programs at these institutions. Programs at the MGH main campus are integrated and continued interaction is facilitated by the close proximity. More importantly, as described in the research base, this Center promotes the interaction of investigators across and among many departments and divisions of the MGH whose research interests span those organizational formats and share a relevance to IBD. Thus, CSIBD Center members at the MGH include investigators within the Departments of Medicine, Pathology, Pediatrics, Molecular Genetics, and Surgery. Within the Department of Medicine, investigators include members of the Gastrointestinal, Arthritis, Renal, and Infectious Disease Units as well as the MGH Cancer Center.
The active collaborations and existing CSIBD programs underscores that this programmatic integration embraces the BIDMC as well. These include joint monthly lab meetings, active Biomedical Cores and numerous specific scientific collaborations. The faculty of the CSIBD primarily based at the BIDMC includes members of the Departments of Medicine and Immunology.
