Imaging People with Tinnitus
We have previously shown fMRI abnormalities in tinnitus subjects. We are now probing fMRI activation in response to sound stimuli to: (1) determine which brainstem, thalamic and cortical centers show abnormalities in tinnitus subjects (2) clarify the relative roles of tinnitus and hyperacusis (which often accompanies tinnitus) in fMRI abnormalities of the auditory pathway (3) test whether our fMRI approach generalizes to tinnitus subjects with hearing loss (4) determine, in subjects whose tinnitus varies over time, whether abnormalities increase and decrease according to tinnitus severity.
