 Paul M. Vanhoutte, MD, MS

Biosketch:

Dr. Vanhoutte is a Distinguished Visiting Professor, and Director of the BioPharmaceutical Development Centre, at the University of Hong Kong . The Centre is meant to enable tradable research in the University. He is Honorary or Visiting Professor in several Universities in China and in Europe. Dr. Vanhoutte is member of many scientific associations and medical academies throughout the world. He currently is President of the International Union of Pharmacology (IUPHAR).

Dr. Vanhoutte was born in Belgium, where he obtained his degrees at the University of Ghent and the University of Antwerp (Agreggatie Hoger Onderwijs). He received his postdoctoral training at the University of Ghent and at the Mayo Clinic (Rochester, MN). His academic career took him from the University of Ghent to the University of Antwerp, the Mayo Clinic (Rochester, MN) and Baylor College of Medicine (Houston, TX). From 1992 to 2002, Dr. Vanhoutte was Vice-President R&D, and Director of Discovery Research at the French pharmaceutical company Servier. During his tenure as Director of Discovery Research at Servier, he supervised the discovery and preclinical development of drugs designed for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, obesity, central nervous system disorders, cancer and osteoarthritis.  Dr. Vanhoutte authored or edited 33 books. He has published more than thousand scientific articles. His major scientific contribution has been to appreciate and analyze the importance of endothelial cells in the control of the underlying vascular smooth muscle in health and disease, and to highlight the complexity of that regulation.  Dr. Vanhoutte has received the Doctor Honoris Causa degree of the Universities of Gent, Zürich, Antwerp and Montréal. In 2002, he founded PharmAdvice, a consulting company that assists Chinese companies to find industrial partners and investors in Western countries, and European companies to establish research agreements and improve image building in China.
