Center for Pain Medicine Clinical Research

Overview

The staff of the Massachusetts General Hospital Center for Pain Medicine is committed to advancing our knowledge of the evaluation and treatment of pain through the conduct of well-designed clinical trials.  Our staff has led numerous national and international clinical trials evaluating new procedures, devices and medications for the treatment of pain.

Investigators

Ongoing Trials

PI Description Status
Shihab Ahmed, M.D. 1 Research project to examine the number or chronic pain patients versus acute pain patients on the inpatient service, by evaluating demographics, history of chronic opioid use and substance abuse, in order to help refine pain center services. On-going

1 Ketamine Study. A randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled study to evaluate the efficacy and safety of PMI-150 to placebo as an analgesic for the treatment of breakthrough pain in cancer patients.

Co-Investigators: Jianren Mao, MD, PhD; Lucy Chen, MD

On-going
2 Pain in patients after total knee replacement surgery. On-going
3 Acute Post-operative pain database. Analysis of patient populations, surgical procedures, analgesic techniques, outcomes and complications with the goal of improving on acute postoperative pain.

Padma Gulur, MD

1 (Phase I) Children's computer assessment of pain. This study uses an electronic questionnaire to study the applicability and feasibility of a new, hand-held, interactive electronic computer for measuring pain in children, as compared with the current static, scaling methods of pain assessment. Phase I complete
2 (Phase II) Measuring Children's Pain and Mood by Facial Expressions On-going
3 Three-Dimensional Pain Mapping ? To determine the benefits of using a Three-Dimensional (3-D) Pain Mapping program for persons with chronic pain to indicate the location, intensity, and depth of their pain on a three-dimensional model. On-going
Ronald Kulich, PhD 1 Chronic Opioid Therapy Program. This program aims to ascertain characteristics that may help providers better assess a patient's candidacy for a chronic opioid therapy regimen as a viable treatment option for a chronic pain condition.

Co-investigators: Jane Ballantyne, MD, Gary Polykoff, MD

On-going
Jianren Mao, M.D., Ph.D.

1 Pain responses in patients on long-term opioid therapy for chronic pain: evaluating pain responses in patients on long-term opiates. This study uses quantitative sensory testing to measure pain responses in patients on long term opioid therapy compared to patients not on opioid therapy.

Co-Investigator: Lucy Chen, MD

On-going
2 Clinical management of opioid-induced hyperalgesia with Tramadol ER?. This study aims to evaluate the possible role of Tramadol ER? in managing opioid induce hyperalgesia.
