Professional Activities
My research activities are currently focused on approaches to ventilatory support of ARDS/ALI patients and the use of trending of physiologic variables during ventilatory support to identify patients with a high probability of lengthy ventilatory support, increased mortality, development of sepsis, and other adverse events. Our research on approach to ventilatory support is both in the laboratory and at the bedside. We are currently focused on lung recruitment techniques and their physiologic impact, as well as their impact on lung injury. We are currently using a non-invasive prototype device (electrical impedance tomography) to evaluate change in lung volume with various ventilatory techniques and during weaning. We are also studying approaches to ventilation during CPR and are involved in an international randomized control trial of approaches to management of ARDS.
