Obstetric Anesthesia
The Massachusetts General Hospital Vincent Obstetric Service was started as a high-risk tertiary referral service featuring dedicated OB anesthesia staff and a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Currently, through the coordinated efforts of a multidisciplinary team of anesthesia providers, obstetricians, perinatologists, midwives, neonatologists and nurses, this service supports an estimated 3,400 births each year.
The Division of Obstetric Anesthesia is wholly dedicated to providing constant in-house and on-site coverage of the obstetric floors. More than 70% of our patients receive epidural or combined spinal-epidural analgesia for labor. The majority of patients who have cesarean deliveries may also be administered regional anesthetics. In addition to cesarean deliveries, the OB anesthesia team provides on-site anesthesia services for other obstetric-related operative procedures including postpartum tubal ligations and cervical cerclage placements.
Members of our staff are leaders in patient safety initiatives within the hospital and are contributors to our specialty on a national level through lectures, publications and professional society contributions. This diversity of talent, experience and scope of influence enhances the academic and clinical mission of the Division. |
