Jerrold F. Rosenbaum, MD Chief of Psychiatry
hank you for visiting the Massachusetts General Hospital Department of Psychiatry, a department ranked #1 by U.S. News & World Report for 13 years running. This is a unique department in many ways. We have a track record of doing clinical research ofAmerica's Best Hospitals direct relevance to patient care, and the researchers who do this work are clinicians themselves dedicated particularly to the evaluation and treatment of those patients whose conditions have been most difficult to improve. The resulting knowledge and experience prepares our faculty to be extraordinary teachers who can address science and data but also the practical challenges of treating real patients. We disseminate this knowledge to colleagues in many ways. For example, over the last 30 years we have been offering educational programs in Boston through Harvard Medical School's Division of Continuing Education which have drawn thousands of colleagues to learn a broad range of topics from psychotherapy to psychopharmacology, from child to adult. This year we have added national programs to reach those who have been unable to attend our Boston based courses.

We have an annual research budget approaching 50 million dollars, 70 clinical or research fellows, 100 residents and interns (child and adult), over 400 clinical (MD, PhD and MD. PhD.) and 100 non-clinical staff. The department was founded in 1934 and its intellectual identity rests on its history of viewing the mind and brain as one and on its role as a general hospital service where Psychiatry is foremost a medical specialty. Historically, our core expertise was in the psychiatric care of the medical and surgical patient, yet our training and clinical programs have grown to address all the critical expertises of the modern psychiatrist, from psychiatric neuroscience to psychopharmacology and psychotherapies. I hope you enjoy your visit as you explore our many resources.
