Cláudio N. Soares, MD PhD

Dr. Soares is currently the Associate Director for Research of the Massachusetts General Hospital Center for Women's Mental Health, and an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Soares is a psychiatrist who earned his medical degree and later on his doctorate (Ph.D.) in Psychoneuroendocrinology from the University of Sao Paulo Medical School, in Brazil. His postdoctoral fellowship in Perinatal and Reproductive Psychiatry was completed at Harvard Medical School (1999-2001).

Over the past 12 years Dr Soares has been involved in the design and conduct of various research projects related to female reproductive mood disturbance. Dr. Soares' research interests are primarily devoted to the study of female reproductive mood disturbance, including the evaluation of new treatments for premenstrual dysphoric disorder, and the role of hormonal and non-hormonal interventions for treating depression and other complaints during the menopausal transition.

He is a recipient of numerous honors and awards, including the North American Society for Psychosocial Obstetrics and Gynecology (NASPOG) Award, and two National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression (NARSAD) Awards. Dr. Soares is a sought-after lecturer in academic symposia at annual meetings of the American Psychiatric Association and multiple other national and international organizations. He has published extensively in the area of women's mental health, with more than 70 publications (peer-reviewed manuscripts, books, and book chapters). His articles are published in Archives of General Psychiatry, Journal of Affective Disorders, Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, American Journal of Psychiatry, and Menopause, to name a few. He has also worked as a reviewer for major scientific publications in the field of Psychiatry, Endocrinology, and Obstetrics & Gynecology, such as JAMA, Archives of General Psychiatry, American Journal of Psychiatry, Fertility & Sterility, Psychosomatic Medicine, Psychoneuroendocrinology, Menopause, among others.
