Kathy M. Sanders, M.D.

Kathy M. Sanders, MD is the Training Director of the MGH/McLean Adult Psychiatry Residency Training Program and Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. From 1993 through 2001, she served the Department of Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital as the Director of the Acute Psychiatry Service. She continues to teach and supervise in the APS and the MGH Department of Emergency Medicine.

Dr. Sanders earned her BA from the University of Pennsylvania and then attended the Medical College of Pennsylvania (now known as the Drexel University School of Medicine). After medical school, she served in the US Public Health Service as a general practitioner prior to entering residency training in psychiatry at Michigan State University. She came to MGH in 1988 for a Consultation Liaison Fellowship and has been a full-time member of the staff since then. She has held numerous positions within the Department on the Consultation Liaison Service, outpatient clinic serving HIV/AIDS patients and medically complicated patients, and on the inpatient unit.

She has authored or co-authored numerous articles and chapters on the medical aspects of psychiatry, agitation and violence, and emergency psychiatry. Current research projects include studying and teaching leadership, sociocultural curriculum development, career choice as it relates to the focus of residency curriculum, and developing valid core competency evaluation processes.
