David B. Herzog, M.D.
David Herzog, M.D. is a leading internationally renowned expert on eating disorders and Professor of Psychiatry (Pediatrics) at Harvard Medicals School. Dr. Herzog is credited with over 200 publications. In 1980, Dr. Herzog founded the Eating Disorders Unit at Massachusetts General Hospital and has served as its Director since its inception.
Dr. Herzog serves as President of the Harvard Medical School Eating Disorders Center at Massachusetts General Hospital (HEDC). The HEDC is a non-profit center dedicated to eating disorders research, education/outreach, and advocacy. The HEDC is dedicated to expanding knowledge about the detection, treatment, and prevention of eating disorders. Dr. Herzog is also the Founder and President of the Eating Disorders Coalition for Research, Policy, & Action (EDC), a non-profit organization comprised of twenty-four eating disorders organizations and over 450 families, whose mission is to advance eating disorders as a public health priority.
Dr. Herzog has received honors and awards for his work, including the Outstanding Psychiatrist Award for Research from the Massachusetts Psychiatric Society and the Simon Wile Award from the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry for outstanding leadership and contributions in the field of consultation liaison psychiatry. Dr. Herzog was the recipient of the Joseph B. Goldberger Award in Clinical Nutrition from the American Medical Association and he received the Blanche F. Ittleson Award from the American Psychiatric Association. He is the Principle Investigator of a National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) funded naturalistic longitudinal study of 250 women with anorexia and bulimia nervosa. The study maps the course and outcome of anorexia and bulimia. Now in its 17th year, this is the largest prospective study of its kind.
