Oliver Freudenreich, MD

Oliver Freudenreich, MD is a staff psychiatrist in the Massachusetts General Hospital Schizophrenia Program and director of the MGH First-Episode And Early Psychosis Program. He is a psychiatric instructor at Harvard Medical School and at Boston University Medical School.

Dr. Freudenreich received his medical degree from the University of Heidelberg in Germany. He completed his psychiatric residency at UMDNJ (formerly Rutgers) in New Jersey. Additional training included a 2-year fellowship at Duke University in psychiatric research and a 1-year fellowship at MGH in consultation psychiatry. The Duke fellowship exposed him to clinical trials methodology as well as sophisticated psychopharmacology of schizophrenia. For his involvement in research and teaching, he has received fellowships from the Society of Biological Psychiatry, from the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine, and the American Association of Directors of Psychiatric Residency Training, and he was named Teacher of the Year in the Department of Psychiatry at Boston University.

His interest is in the area of psychopharmacology for patients with chronic schizophrenia. He has published articles, review articles, editorials, and book chapters in his areas of expertise. He is currently co-investigator for the NIMH-sponsored CATIE trial that compares the efficacy of conventional and atypical antipsychotics. He is also interested in the optimal treatment of patients who experience their first psychotic episode and possible early intervention. Dr. Freudenreich is receiving support from the Stanley Foundation for his research.
